The coastline of Great Britain is surprisingly long, the mainland alone estimated at around 11,073 miles (17,820 kilometers). If we add the main island groups of Scotland, England and Wales, the coastal length increases to an almost incredible 19,491 miles (31,368 kilometers). This site offers free-to-view maps of that entire coastline, large scale maps derived from the Bartholomew half inch map series of last century. All maps may be accessed simply by clicking on a blue dot on the map on the home page or by selecting a coastal place name from the coastal map index page. The maps show the British coast in all its splendid variety, from the islands of Shetland to the Isles of Scilly; from Lewis to Dover, with everything in between. The mapss date from the middle of the twentieth century and, although much will have changed, particularly in the more densely populated areas, the maps still reflect the essential physical character of the British Coast. more info >>

Cartography is the art and science of depicting a geographical area in graphical form on various types of maps. For the last half millennium now, surveyors and cartographers have measured and documented the surface of the Earth, and they have recorded their findings on maps. Some people study maps to learn about terrain features or highway and road layouts, while others use them to plan business trips or vacation getaways. Still others consider maps to be artworks, suited for framing or displaying in a museum. This website comprises several static and interactive world maps as well as statistical data about the seven continents and their countries. more info >>
